Road Transport in Pathankot

Pathankot is located at the juncture of three important National Highways.  Among them, NH 15 starts from Pathankot. This 1526 Km road runs through Punjab. Rajasthan and ultimately culminates at Samakhiali in Gujarat. Meanwhile it passes through many important cities such as Amritsar, Tarn Taran Sahib, Zira, Kotkapura, Bhatinda, Ganganagar, Bikhankot, Jaisalmer and Barmer.

Another important roadway in this area is NH1A. It starts from Uri in Kashmir and culminates at Jalandhar in Punjab passing through Pathankot on the way. Incidentally, this road has now been amalgamated with other smaller National Highways and the resultant road has been renamed as NH44. However, people still refer to it as NH1A. The third most important road in this area is NH 154. It starts at Pathankot and runs through different places in Himachal Pradesh such as Nurpur, Palampur, Jogindarnagar, Mandi, Sundar Nagar, Ghaghas, Bilaspur etc. Moreover, this is one road, which runs directly through the city and a part of it is known as Dalhousie Road. Therefore, this road is also very important for intra-city transportation.

Other than that, there are many other state highways connecting Pathankot to different places in Punjab. With such a network of roads, it is natural that the road transport system in Pathankot will be highly developed.

Bus Terminus and Bus Services in Pathankot

Pathankot has two main bus terminuses. One of them is smaller and is located close to the Railway Station. This bus terminus is used mainly for buses travelling towards Himachal Pradesh. Buses meant for all other places start from Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminal, located on Gurudaspur Road.

Buses that ply to and from Pathankot mainly belong to the Punjab State Transport Corporation. Moreover, quite a few buses belonging to Himachal Road Transport Corporation also ply between Pathankot and various places in Himachal Pradesh. Buses belonging to various private companies also carry a huge number of passengers.

Since Pathankot is a center of trade and commerce, transportation of goods also plays an important role here. There are many private road transport companies ferrying goods to different destinations from Pathankot.

Railways in Pathankot

Railways in Pathankot too play an important role in ferrying passengers and freight. There two principal railway stations in Pathankot. The main station is known as the Pathankot Junction Station. It is located in the heart of the city and is accessible via auto rickshaws and rickshaws from every part of the town. Since trains from various destinations culminate here, this junction station remains very busy night and day.

The other is known as the Chakki Bank Station. However, it has recently been renamed as Pathankot Cantonment Station. This station was built by the British mainly for troop mobilization. Now more than forty passenger trains pass through this station.

Although most trains from Pathankot run on broad gauge track, there is also a narrow gauge service that runs from Pathankot to Jogindar Nagar in Himachal Pradesh. Both the broad and narrow gauge train tracks are being regularly up graded. For example, Jammu-Pathankot railway track has recently been electrified. Numerous trains that reach Pathankot from various destinations make travelling to this city via railway system not only cheap, but also very comfortable.

Air Transport System in Pathankot

It is true that there is an airport in Pathankot, but it is used mainly by the military establishment. A few commercial flights still take off from there; but it is not at all easy to get tickets on them. For a majority of passengers, it is easier to book for tickets Amritsar or Kangra and then travel to Pathankot by rain or road.

Intra-City Travel in Pathankot

For intra city travel, one has to depend mainly on rickshaw, auto rickshaw and taxi services. Pathankot Municipal Corporation has plans to regularize the auto rickshaw routes in near future and once that is done, traveling in Pathankot will become even easier.
