When Pathankot District was carved out of Gurdaspur on 27th July 2011, the city became a natural choice as the district headquarters. Pathankot is the northern most cities in Punjab. It has Shivalik range of mountains located in the south and also in the east. Because of its geographical position, the city has always been politically important. In ancient times, the city was known as Pratisthana. However, later it became to be known as Paithan, which over the years became Pathankot. Since the international border with Pakistan is quite close, the place is very important from military perspective. The 45th Cavalry Regiment and 29th Infantry Division of the Indian Army have their headquarters located at Pathankot.
